Iceland Winter Vow Renewal

It’s always such an honor to photograph fellow photographers. When Kimber of Water Bear Photography asked me to photograph her and Will’s vow renewal in Iceland, I was SO in! I had never been to Iceland in the winter, but knew it would be especially magical! We anticipated that it wasn’t going to be easy shooting there with the ice and wind, but wow were we surprised by just how extreme the weather ended up being!

The day we met, there was a blizzard in Vik where we planned to shoot. It was the wind that was really something. Gusts reached up to 60 mph and there were very little breaks. We met in the parking lot of the popular Reynisfjara Beach and sat in the car just watching as people struggled to stand while attempting to get to the beach! Luckily we had two days to work with to get these photos in.

We decided to take it easy and try a few spots further inland. We were pretty successful with that plan, aside from the insane driving conditions and getting stuck in a road closure! The following day we had a private ice cave tour booked, but ran into another road closure which kept us from getting to the meeting point. Luckily, there’s an ice cave in a region we were able to access. We are so grateful to KatlaTrack for providing a tour for us last minute!

The trip was definitely on the crazy side, but it was such a fun adventure with the best company! Kimber and Will got married on leap year in 2012. They actually met while cave diving, which is a hobby they still enjoy doing together. Kimber actually specializes in doing underwater maternity and wedding portraits! So awesome! I loved hearing their stories of their adventures together. They now have a little boy and travel a lot as a family. Hopefully they can bring their son back to Iceland sometime during the warmer months! These two were such troopers with the weather. Together I feel we created some really epic images!

I’m so grateful to have documented this milestone in their relationship and thankful for all of the fun memories we now share!
